1. What do you think about the statement: "behavior is the key ingredient to being right with God"? What does the pursuit of good behavior cause in us? In others?
2. Read Matthew 23:5-26. Which of Jesus' comments to the Pharisees stuck out to you the most? Why?
3. Matthew 23:15. What does that tell you about Jesus and what he thought of the way the religious leaders were living? Does his reaction surprise you about Jesus? Why?
4. Matthew 23:23-24. Where have you seen people living by the letter of the law, or going above and beyond to follow minute little rules, and missing out on stuff like faithfulness, mercy, or justice? Where have you been most tempted to do that?
5. Talk about, or write down, what you thought about the illustration from Matthew 23:25-26. Is that ever true in your life? What on the inside, needs to be cleaned in your life?
6. Where do you see the cup illustration in real life today in our society? Why?
7. Do you think you can really meet God & know Him, but not have the "inside of the cup" (in the process of being cleaned)? Why or why not?
